What Are We Looking For?
“I have been knocking on the door. It opens.
I’ve been knocking from the inside!”
— Rumi
Dear Friends,
“I look at my phone way too much,” I say to my friend as we walk near his office.
“Dude, same with me,” he replies. “It’s wild how many times I look without even thinking.”
We can’t exactly blame our phones—but something’s going on.
We’re constantly connected in ways that may serve the tech companies (Mark Zuckerberg is now worth around $200 billion!) but does not necessarily serve us.
Evan Williams, cofounder of Twitter (now X), put it powerfully at Wisdom 2.0 years ago:
“Our attention has been hijacked—and it’s primarily been hijacked by advertising-driven business models that are not driven to make us more wise.”
And now, with AI and ever more sophisticated algorithms, the challenge deepens—but perhaps the opportunity does too.
Here is one idea:
When we don’t know who we are or what matters, TECHNOLOGY runs the show.
But when we do KNOW WHO WE ARE and what matters, technology becomes a MAGNIFICENT TOOL.
So the real invitation is this:
To remember who we are and what truly matters.
So when we look at our phone constantly … what are we actually looking for? Can we become curious?
Maybe we are looking for ourselves. (and hoping our phone will provide the answer)
But like Rumi, what if we are knocking from inside the room?
If we are curious, we get to explore what is true for us :-)
Wisdom + Business is this Friday. Wisdom 2.0 is a little more than 1 month away.
