Dear Friends,
Some time ago, I was sitting in a van driving to interview the CEO of a tech company. The company had offered to pick me up at the airport, and I was happy to accept.
As we drove, the driver posed questions to me.
After several questions, it started to feel like an interview, and I asked her, “Hold it, are you interviewing me? And then do you report back to the CEO?”
She responded. “Actually, yes, we do this for all visitors, particularly people who are applying for a job. We want to know how visitors relate to everyday people who often go unnoticed, like van drivers.”
Talking to the CEO later, he said one of their core beliefs is that every human has value. They want people who work there to be aligned with that and how an applicant relates to the van driver gives them valuable information.
THE LIFE INTERVIEW
You could say that we are always being interviewed, and LIFE, the universe, or whatever you want to call it, is keeping track of how we respond in all situations.
You might think, “Well, I respond to all people equally.”
Maybe, but does your attention in a room go slightly to the people who have more influence and power than those who do not?
Does your attention linger more with younger people than older people?
Do you find yourself more drawn to talking to people you view as attractive versus unattractive? Does your attention stay with those people longer?
The unnoticed, the ones without traditional power or beauty or status, the forgotten people … how we relate to them tells us a lot about what we value.
In India there is a phrase, “When you see God in everyone, everyone will see God in you.”
Today, may we notice the unnoticed, both in ourselves and in our society.
In a world desperate for healing and connection, may we each do our part.
