Dear Friends,
Last year Meta bragged to investors that advancements in their AI increased user time on Instagram by 24%.
It was 24% then, and it will likely grow to 50% and then 75% or 100%. Eventually the AI will become so good, it can control someone’s life, so young minds spend ALL their time on digital platforms.
WHO WINS?
Of course, to the AI powered algorithm, this is amazing! To the young person’s mental health, who needs contact with nature and loved ones, this is very dangerous. The AI does not need to sleep, and it is better for business if we do not sleep either. It’s job: increase our time by any and all means.
(Tristan Harris and I discussed this at our NYC event here)
IS THIS THE WORLD WE ARE CREATING?
This could be the world we create. Or we could create a world where every child, no matter income, has a digital tutor to help answer any questions, equalizing the access to information. Where doctors use AI to help discover new drugs to fight diseases, and where they can better direct our health.
And where the AI companies have clear guardrails they must follow, especially as it relates to young people. AI has its place, but humanity is forefront.
WHICH WORLD WILL COME TO BE?
The answer, of course, depends (in part anyways) on us, and how our society navigates this unprecedented time.
It is very hard to slow AI down at this point, and it also cannot run rampant.
