Dear Friends,
I have always appreciated the above quote and find it particularly helpful in the summer months.
I love vacations as much as the next person … AND they can also be another way of looking outside of ourselves — once we get to this new city, or to this lake, or to ____ then we will be happy.
Of course, a change of environment can help, but increasingly we realize:
No change in the external world can satiate what is unresolved in our internal world.
We bring ourselves (and our issues!) everywhere we go. No matter how beautiful (or how challenging) the external might be, the real game is the internal.
I have been on vacations that have been some of the most stressful times, as people are expecting it to, at last, help them relax. And when it does not, when people still feel incomplete and frustrated, it can be extremely hard.
We think, “this was supposed to, at last, relax me and it is not doing it!”
I have seen this with entrepreneurs who think once they sell their company or take it public, at last they will feel whole, they will feel complete. And when they get what they wanted, and still feel hollow, it is so hard for them.
What we often need is to sit still for a minute, and connect with ourselves. As Rumi reminds us, “This universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself.”
We can still achieve, create, manifest … and also know the internal is home base. So wishing you a summer of great trips — and great inner journeys.
