“Most of what we do would be better done more slowly. There are very few things better done by speeding them up….”
— Iain Mcgilchrist
Dear Friends,
I was sitting with some friends at a kitchen table the other day, and one of them said,
“My brain doesn’t seem to work the way it used to.”
“I can’t focus as well,” she continued. “I scroll social media more, and read books less.”
Most of us at the table agreed. And we are not alone … studies suggest our attention spans have been significantly decreasing.
We have become more accustomed to short hits of dopamine rather than deep reflection and attention…
And every year, the pull toward speed and distraction grows stronger, fueled in large part by technology
While technology GIVES (and it is amazing what it does give) it also TAKES.
The Speed of our Minds …
The problem isn’t just what we consume — it’s our quality of mind.
When our minds are racing, even the highest-quality content can’t take root.
It’s like tossing seeds onto concrete — or trying to offer a spiritual teaching to someone sprinting past.
No matter how beautiful the message, little is absorbed.
Slowing Down
I love the quote above from Iain McGilchrist because it invites us to inquire: if it is true that “most of what we do would be better done more slowly,” why are we moving so fast?
Most technologies are designed to accelerate our life, wanting us to think there is something urgent demanding our attention.
Yet I find myself learning — and re-learning — a different rhythm:
Moving from “there’s ALWAYS SOMETHING I must do” to “there is NO TRUE EMERGENCY in this moment.”
Conclusion
So what actions benefit from us doing them more slowly?
Possibly, just about everything!
In our eating, can we slow down? In our lovemaking, can we slow down? In our walking, can we slow down?
In our LIFE, what might it mean to slow down?
“For fast acting relief, try slowing down.” — Lily Tomlin
