Dear Friends,
A woman once came to Gandhi with her child, concerned about her child's habit of eating too much sugar. Knowing how much her child respected Gandhi, she asked him, “Could you please tell my daughter to stop eating sugar?”
Gandhi listened and then replied, “Please come back in two weeks.”
The woman and her child returned two weeks later. This time, Gandhi simply told the child, “Please do not eat sugar.” Grateful, the mother thanked him, but she couldn’t help asking, “Why did we need to wait two weeks for you to say that?”
Gandhi said, “Two weeks ago, I was eating sugar.”
We teach as much through our presence as through our words. How many parents get mad at their kids for being on their cell phones, while they are constantly on their cell phones? Or tell their children to “relax” when they are anything but at that time?
Dick Schwartz talks about the U-Turn, focusing back on ourselves, to the state of our own consciousness. What are we saying through our words and what our we saying through our Being?
Most likely, people notice what we FEEL more than they HEAR what we say. Our State of Being is the real communicator.
So as we make our way today, maybe we can inquire at times, What is our state of being communicating?
And can we pause and tend to our inner world (Go for a short walk, breath for a few minutes, get in nature) so our words and presence are aligned. The real game is the inner one.
Blessings,
SOREN
